Buy an existing, already successful business!

Think about it… the current owner has already
made all of the mistakes, gone through the learning
curve, and put all of the tested systems in place.

You just step in, maybe make a few minor tweaks,
and you have a real business, that makes you money
from day-1.

One of the first questions you should ask is, “Why
would anyone sell a proven successful business that
is actually very profitable, and will continue to
be so for the foreseeable future?”

Asking that question might uncover reasons that you
should definitely NOT buy a given business.

I have people approach me all of the time asking me
to help them find buyers for their businesses. They
give me two main reasons for selling:

1) The business is taking too much time away from
family or other priorities. I see this most with
parents of young children who simply want to cash
out and spend more time taking their children to
the park, and going on school trips with them.

2) They have too many projects going at once and
realize that unless they let go of some, none of
them will be as successful as they should be.

I see this with people who remind me a lot of myself.
They come up with dozens of great ideas in a single
day, implement many of them over time, and then find
that they simply have too many divergent businesses
going at once. These are friends that often
reach out to me, asking if I want to buy their
businesses.

As you consider taking over an existing, already
successful business, there are questions that you
absolutely need to answer. Some of the most
important ones are:

1) How easy is it for someone to simply see what you
are doing, and create a very similar site/business.
If it’s too easy to duplicate, then I tend to stay
away.

2) Is the niche just a fad or has it been around
for a while, and will it continue to grow?

3) How much traffic does the website already get?
How well positioned are they in the search engines?
Where do their customers come from and how do they
find the site?

I’ve seen sites sell for LESS than the value of existing
organic search engine traffic. With a site like this,
you just take over and it effortlessly pays for itself!

4) Is there a customer/member/subscriber/affiliate
database, and how big is it?

In some niches, a list is easily worth several dollars
per member, per month. In other niches, the same
size list is worth much less.

5) How much time will it take to manage the site?
Can this management be outsourced or handed off to a
manager?

If they are selling because they didn’t have enough
time to really focus on it, will things be different
for you?

6) Will the current owner or project manager stay on
for a while to help you ease into the business?

7) What market forces might change demand for that
product?

You do want to take on most businesses with an eye
toward increasing their value and then selling them.
Go in with an exit plan, or you’re just creating a job
for yourself.

Those are just a few of many things to consider. You
should also bounce the idea off of a trusted friend or
two… or your mastermind group. They might see things
that you didn’t consider, or might have even tried
something similar before.

I sincerely believe that it’s often a LOT cheaper to
simply step into an existing proven business.

We also realize that the wrong business can be a HUGE
mistake!

Why do I bring up this topic in the first place?

Well, I did tell you that I broker businesses from time
to time. I DO have friends/contacts/clients with
businesses for sale.

These businesses have been around for a while, have
customer bases, and all sell for six figures.

David offered all this for the insane price of
$497 per YEAR (less than 10 cents per domain per
year if I used all of the available “slots”)

Even if you only build a few dozen sites, this was
an a great bargain.

However, I got the INSANE idea of actually building
5000 niche websites (mostly WordPress blogs).

My idea was to build them in niches that my
research showed were profitable, cross-link
them using the hub and spoke methods, and…

in some niches, eventually dominate.

My thinking was that some of these sites would do
really, really well, and others wouldn’t but if I
had 5000 sites each averaging just $1 per day…..

well…

You Do The Math

I also knew that some sites would really take off,
and at that point I could either sell those sites
off for a NICE profit or, I could hang on to those
cash-cows and just collect monthly income.

NOTE:
I actually ended up plugging many of those sites that
I DID build into a traffic generation network, where
I sell the traffic to others!

I also knew that like most internet marketers, I had
a hard drive FULL of resale rights, and private label
rights products that I had purchased and did NOTHING
with.

Granted, most of those products were garbage from the
very beginning, or had grow out of date, BUT…

Some were real gems where the product creators had
put in a lot of time, energy, and other resources into
creating a great product, often with a great set of
graphics, and a great sales letter.

I had several HUNDRED products that I could easily
actually put on domains (or sub-domains), plug in
a Paypal button, and start making money from.

However, I had to admit that without traffic, you don’t
really have any sales. SO, I created affiliate programs
for many of these sites, setting up instant paying
affiliate programs on some of them… often using my
friend Sid Hale’s Rapid Action Profits script to
power the affiliate programs.

Not wanting my products to look and feel like cheap
PLR or resale rights products, I DID often revise them,
have new graphics created, and update the sales pages
to add things like testimonials from actual customers.

I also had my graphics person create new graphics for
many of these products (where permitted by the terms
specified by the product creator).

Then I started building an affiliate force for many
of these sites, often just by reaching out to affiliate
marketers that I knew (via email, on Skype, on Twitter
and Facebook, via special sites/networks set up for
this purpose, and at live events).

Yes, it does sound like I was very busy, but I don’t
do most of the legwork myself. I do have full-time
virtual employees who do graphics, copywriting,
tech support, programming, site installations and
updates, some social media functions, testing and
tracking, etc.).

Still I was, and am, very busy, but when in December

I was recently reading a book called “The 21 Irrefutable Laws Of
Leadership” by John Maxwell. In his book, John points out that
when outside experts take over companies with the tasking to turn
them around, the very first thing that they usually do is FIRE the
top management. The experts reason that if the top management
were effective then the company wouldn’t be failing.

The outside experts reasoned that bad management , making poor
decisions, was one of the big reasons WHY these businesses were
failing.

Having spent 20 years in the military, where I was groomed to
lead, and having formal college training in business management,
that makes perfect sense to me.

I had not previously given the topic of leadership a lot of thought
because my focus was on how to build a successful online business,
and I hadn’t really made the connection between the two. I HAD

I’ve gotten off topic slightly, but you’ll see how this all ties
together momentarily. A good business executive is worth a lot,
and if you are running your own online business, you need to
become an effective business executive.

In a recent post to FaceBook, I pointed out that not everyone is
meant to own their own business. I went on to hint at a few of
the traits needed to be an effective business owner. That post was
partly inspired by the fact that I have interacted with so many
owners of failing businesses lately.

People come to me asking “What am I doing wrong?”

People come to me asking for suggestions on how to improve their
businesses, and if I dig a little deeper, I see that what they are
often asking is “How do I save this sinking ship.”

I tell some of them how to turn their businesses around.

I spot what’s wrong with some businesses, see that the owners
aren’t the right person for turning them around, and sometimes
offer to buy those businesses… with plans on putting the proper
management/leadership in place.

I point out to some business owners the sad fact that they are
marketing a product that the market simply doesn’t want… and
is unlikely to want any time soon.

For the businesses that I do help turn around, I do the following
things:

1) Look at their existing product mix, confirming that they are
offering what the market wants, and that it’s appropriately
priced.

2) Look at their business processes. Often their system needs
to be replaced with one that’s more effective. Often they don’t
even HAVE a system. They are running the business by reacting
to emergencies rather than executing a plan.

3) Look at the business’ assets, looking for assets that are
under-utilized. THIS is often what allows me to most easily turn
a failing business around. I guide the business owners through
identifying and re-deploying or leveraging those assets.

4) Look for other businesses that can form strategic relationships
or partnerships with the failing business… to benefit both
businesses. Often the failing business owner DOESN’T have
critical resources or know-how and CAN’T succeed unless they
leverage others’ assets. I help these businesses form strategic
alliances or joint ventures. I create new partnerships, and in
the process often save several failing businesses.

That’s how I turn a failing business around. That’s how you can
turn your own failing business around. I’ll look deeper into
each of the aspects listed above in future articles. For now,

view of what your business really looks like and why it might be
struggling.

cheap hosting, typically they can’t afford to have tech
support personnel sitting around waiting for your “trouble
tickets.”

So when I got really serious, and acknowledged that I
could NOT afford to have my websites offline even .01%
of the time, I moved to dedicated servers with my own
support team.

At some point, you may be ready for a dedicated server,
but most of my subscribers and friends aren’t.

You probably just need shared hosting with a company that
also offers world-class hosting at an affordable price.

That’s NOT an easy feat to accomplish since there are so
many variables in the hosting business. There are as
many possible server configurations as there are
imaginative individuals.

Most hosting companies, in an effort to maximize profits,
simply pack as many accounts onto each server as possible.
They know that they’ve overdone it when a server bogs
down.

I’ve caused more than one server to bog down, because I
build some fairly resource intensive sites. When that
happened, my hosts wisely asked me to consider a dedicated
server… as they should have.

Despite what you want to believe, there is no such thing as
shared hosting with unlimited EVERYTHING. That’s
impossible since just ONE customer could hog all of the
server resources… slowing his and all of the other customers’
websites to a crawl.

Still, in 2008, I found what I considered my ideal host.
