A few months ago, I noticed that one of my web servers was
crashing every few days. My web host took one look and said
that I had too many programs running simultaneously.

After a little digging around, I discovered that hackers had
placed a program on my server that was engaged in doing some
fairly nasty things.

That program got onto my server via an out-of-date script. It
was a script that I installed on a website, decided not to use,
and then ignored. I should have deleted it!

The bad guys quickly learn where the holes are in popular
website scripts. That’s why organizations such as WordPress.org
and Microsoft are constantly releasing updates.

Hackers had used a known hole in a script to upload another
script onto my server, and from there, do their thing. If they
hadn’t bogged down my server so much, I probably wouldn’t have
noticed for a very long time.

I’m telling you this because I you have older scripts running
on your server, you probably have “attack vectors” just
inviting the bad guys in.

The solution is simply to update the scripts that power your
website as soon as stable updates are released. That’s what my
team is actually busy doing right now. We’re updating our sites
to the latest, thoroughly tested, stable version of WordPress.

The thing is that, if you’re on C-panel, that upgrade isn’t easy
to do automatically. However, there is a plug-in that makes the
automated upgrade a snap. It works great if you’re not on
C-panel too.

There are also several critical things that you need to do to
“lock-down” your WordPress installations.
