and done” product launches. Those are the types of launches
where you do one or two promotions for a product and then
it’s pulled off the market.

I don’t know about you, but I personally DISLIKE those
types of promotion for two reasons:

1) It means that as an affiliate marketers, even if I am
successful at selling my customers that products, I need
to look for something else to sell them a week later. The
big DISCONNECT there is that that means I can’t really
even give them time to benefit from what I just sold them
before I’m suggesting that they buy something else.

I honestly don’t think that’s fair to my subscribers who
would really benefit from that first product IF they would
just take the time to go through it and actually APPLY what
it teaches. I shouldn’t be distracting them from being able
to do that.

2) With many promotions that we do, our subscribers may
not even get around to reading an email, or being ready
to buy, until a week or more later. With the one-and-done
promotions, by the time they are ready to focus on the offer,
it’s too late.

So, we waste all that effort. Those are two reasons that
I’m focused on the product that Terry recommends. It’s
something that you can honestly promote today, and earn
commissions on a year or more later.

David actually “tags” your referrals in his database in a
way that you earn LIFETIME commissions… and you get credit
even if they delete their cookies because his affiliate
tracking system does not depend upon cookies.

And they’re not finished yet. Each month they send me money for
clicks I sent 8 months ago.

That $4.68 per unique click for me has been increasing each
month.

Back in 1990, while stationed at Yokota Air Base,
Japan, I let some co-workers talk me into climbing
Mt. Fuji.

It was a rather long, somewhat tedious climb, that I
think took me five hours. We started our climb at a
“station” already partly up the mountain… where
buses commonly dropped people off.

We climbed at night, when it was cooler, with
flashlights strapped to our heads. It was fun looking
down the mountain and seeing all of the other lights,
like a trail of ants

The air got thinner and thinner as we climbed, and
I had to stop and take numerous breaks. We arrived
at the top somewhere around sunrise, if I remember
correctly.

After a short break, where we admired the scenery,
noticing that the water was actually bubbling in the
crater of the still-active volcano, and taking lots of
photos, we headed back down.

All the way up, I followed a well-traveled path. I stuck
to the zig-zag trail most of the way back down too.

However, I did stop once, and noticing that if I got
off the trail for a while, I could probably save
50 yards, by going more direct.

That’s when life taught me that often it’s better
to follow the well-blazed trail than to think that you
are smarter than tens of thousands of others who could
follow simple, proven instructions.

Almost as soon as I stepped outside the carved pathway,
I could sense that the hill was a lot steeper. In fact,
it was so steep, that I soon began to slide down the side
of the mountain. I dropped to the ground where I
continued to roll until… luckily I arrived back on the
trail.

Getting up, dusting off my torn clothing, and noticing
only a few scrapes and bruises, I waited for my friends
to catch up with me, then smiled sheepishly, and stuck
to the trail the rest of the way down

Online today, I see many people who want to start
businesses, also think that they are smarter that all
of the successful people who have gone before them.

They observe the others successfully navigating the
trail, and earning a decent income, but reason that
there must be a faster, less meticulous way.

Those people try shortcut-after-shortcut, sometimes
getting scrapes and bruises for YEARS, before they
stand up… safely back on the trail, and like me,
sheepishly decide that maybe that’s the better way.

When you think about starting an online business, some
models are just a lot more profitable than others, and a
lot less work too.

The model that I see used the most often, actually makes
the LEAST sense to me. That model is sticking up a
one-page, direct-response sales letter, that offers one
item. Often, the owners of those sites don’t offer the
customers who buy from that sales letter anything else.

The owners of those sites have to forever focus on
generating new traffic to those webpages. Often, they get
bored with one product fairly quickly, and go off to
create something new and “more exciting” for their
potential customers.

A much more profitable model, that requires much less
work once it gains momentum, is a membership site. Build
a site with just 500 members, paying you $20 per month,
and you have a nice residual income of $10k per month!

If you build your site so that the members actually
generate most of the content, then you really have a
dream situation. Then all you need to do is replace the
members who periodically drop out. That’s not even really
a problem because you can just add an affiliate program,
and pay existing members a percentage commission for
bringing in new members.

It really does sound like a dream business – doesn’t it?

It leaves you wondering why more people haven’t actually
set up a dozen such site that are chugging along, making
them a fortune, while they sit on the beach in Brazil.

Actually, I do have numerous successful membership sites,
and I do spend a lot of my time sitting on the beach,
or on cruise ships, or traveling to exotic locations, and
working from my laptop and my cell phone.

However, I do things differently than most people who
operate membership sites. I have a close friend, Steve
Odette, who pointed out the flaw in the way that most
people operate their membership sites, and I took his
teachings to heart.

The first fallacy about membership sites, is that most
that I’ve studied only kept members for an average of
3-4 months. So, these sites are having to constantly
search for new members. That’s not very “residual!”

Most membership sites also only sell their members the
ONE product, and have no built-in, logical way to sell
them other products and services without risking offending
the members.

Where my sites differ is that each time a member logs
in, he or she has immediate access to the content that
they paid for, but in my sites’ navigation bars, they see
links to other products that I have for sale. As they
visit my sites, month-after-month, year-after-year, when
they need one of my other products or services, they
merely need to click on a link and buy that product.

There are two keys to the success of my membership sites:

1) I over-deliver in value. Members stay because they
find that they are actually benefiting from the
membership. Part of the way that I ensure that is by
building in a time-released training program… and
often even one-on-one mentoring.

Since members actually see that their membership is
improving their lives substantially, because they are
actually “consuming the content,” it’s natural for
them to stay for a long, long time.

2) My sites all have multiple ways of becoming a
member, and then being exposed to my other products.

Members may first discover my sites by signing up for
a free mini-course, or accessing some video training.
Some of my sites, have as many as a dozen such related
products/doorways, ALL pointing potential members to a
main site in a given niche.

The secret is that once you have someone inside a given
site, you show them other RELATED products and services
that are logical upsells. So they may enter a site to
access information on dog training, but notice that you
also have products on dog nutrition, dog breeding,
dog clothing, dog health, dog friendly vacation
destinations, etc.

Unlike most sites that have to keep chasing after new
members, mine keeps the momentum going for each new
member, and offer them other closely-related products.

The model that most people use is a lot of stop and
start, so the sites’ owners never really gains any
momentum, or hang on to members very long. My model
gives members what they specifically joined the site
for (over-delivering) and then answers the “what next”
question.

These sites are powered by a full-featured, yet very

Online marketers have long debated the relative merit
of giving away a product in order to gain a subscriber,
and then how to best convert that subscriber into a
paying customer.

Conventional wisdom teaches that you should focus on
building a list, building a relationship with those
list members, and then selling them things that they
need and want.

Since 99% of visitors to most webpages AREN’T going to
buy on that first visit, it does seem logical that you
should capture them onto a list FIRST and then follow up
with them.

So, I’m VERY big into list-building as the primary
objective of most of my websites. I was trained that
each webpage should focus the visitor on taking ONE
primary action. Therefore, I choose for many of my
pages to focus on getting them to opt-in.

Typically, I offer them some type of “ethical bribe” to
get them to join my list. I need to give them a good,
logical reason to join my list. My friend Paul Myers, in
one of his ebooks, “The Amazing List Machine,” explained
that when you get someone to subscribe to your list, you
essentially make a contract” with them to deliver something
that they value now… and on a continuing basis.

Paul goes on to explain that you are obligated to live up
to that contract, and that is also what keeps them on your
list. Since, I’ve had many subscribers for over 10 years,
I must have learned that part reasonably well

There, I give away a free, 20-part mini-course that I call,
Secrets of the Rich!”

On my landing page at the URL above, I promise to share with
them things that multimillionaires and billionaires have
taught me.

I point out that I grew up “dirt poor,” spending most of
my youth on welfare. Slowly, I worked my way into the
circles of some very wealthy and influential people, and
because I actually added value to their lives, they took
me under their wings and groomed me in creating and keeping
wealth. Sharing that history explains that ANYONE can
apply what I learned.

So, my webpage promises to share that knowledge freely
with my readers over the course of 20-lessons.

You might wonder how a free course could make me a profit.
The answer is that I teach my subscribers, but I also point
them to resources that they might want to take advantage of
(sometimes using affiliate links).

However, my upsell is even more subtle. The 20 lessons
are time-released, one per day, over a 20-day period. Each
time that they come back to my site for the next lesson,
I do teach them incredible things. I also offer them other
products!

On each visit, as they log in, they also see a listing
of other products and services that I want to make them
aware of. In the menu bar, they see products that they
already have access to listed first, and then below those
products, they see whatever products I choose to show them.

I use a software called “Rapid Residual Pro” to power all
of my membership sites. Rapid Residual Pro allows me to
add or delete new products shown to members via a
control panel. So, as I add new products to my product
line, selling is as simple as turning on the capability
to show that product to site visitors, or members, on the
next visit.

I can also instantly add new products to my affiliate
program by ticking a few boxes within Rapid Residual Pro.

The Rapid Residual Pro software also allows me to show
one-time offers to members, or to even show a succession
of one-time offers.

Rapid Residual Pro is also excellent for selling one-off
products, such as an ebook or MP3 download. I can send
buyers to the site to purchase and to download the product,
explaining that this makes it easier to provide them with
updates, and to give them bonuses.

I really LOVE the software, and love sharing it with other
serious marketers.

I was taught the “give, give, then take model” when I
first came online. You give your customers something of
value to get them onto your list. You give them genuine value,
ideally over-delivering. You may even give them multiple gifts,
but you don’t give them everything.

At some point, you offer them something for sale, subtly
invoking the law of reciprocity in some cases. If you use
the system that I described, powered by Rapid Residual Pro,
it can be very frictionless, and natural. The marketing does
NOT have to feel hypey, desperate, or too “in your face.”

So now you know how to use a proven, time-tested sales
formula. It’s one that I actually use every day.

As strange as it may seem, many people who open online
businesses, where they plan to earn a living selling
goods and services to others, DON’T enjoy selling.

They often feel that there is something inherently
wrong with selling. So they have a hard time doing
it successfully. Their feelings and beliefs impact how
they carry out running their businesses, and send strong,
negative, nonverbal messages to their prospects.
These prospects respond appropriately, by not buying.

Therefore, if I’ve just described you and you actually
plan to run your own online business, then you need to
CHANGE how you view selling. You do that by only
selling your customers goods and services that you
KNOW will actually improve their lives and bring them
joy!

You only sell products and services that you genuinely
believe in.

If you know that something that your customers want from
you will actually improve their lives, and they are
willing to happily pay you for it, then why WOULDN’T
you sell it to them.

Of course, you could give it to them, but that’s not
generally a sustainable business model. Sometimes giving
away products is appropriate but that needs to be a planned
part of your model. You need to have that flowed into a
system that turns those getting free items into paying
customers later.

I often do that by giving away items in various places
to entice my ideal customers to join my mailing lists.
I do this so that I can follow up with them later on,
offering them items related to the gifts that I gave
them, which they can purchase.

On that site, I’m giving away gifts related to social
media in order to build a list of people interested
in learning to properly leverage social media. As a regular
contributor to a social media magazine with a readership
of over 14.8 million, and having been active on Facebook,
Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms for
many years, I am a seasoned social media expert with lots
of valuable insights to share.

So, I give away free gifts at the URL above to continue
growing my audience, but with the objective of eventually
turning those followers into customers.

The challenge for most novice marketers that I’ve
observed (and even some very seasoned marketers) is
figuring out HOW to convert a “freebie seeker” into a
buying customer.

My system for doing this is automated, and
“frictionless.”

What I do is offer my desired customers free gifts that
are delivered inside a membership site. They visit this
membership site repeatedly to consume the frequently
updated content… and as they do, they are exposed to
my other products and services.

An example of this is a site that I set up to share with
subscribers some “Secrets of the Rich.” In this site, I
give away a free 20-lesson course sharing things that
the rich know and do, that most people don’t seem to
understand, or that they actually notice but choose to
ignore for some reason.

The course shares things that multimillionaires, and even
a couple of billionaires actually taught me, so it is VERY
valuable. It’s 20 lessons of solid content that builds a
strong relationship with my subscribers as they learn how
to improve their lives. My free lessons can substantially
alter their lives, so it’s natural for them to grow to “know,
like and trust” me.

As these lessons are time-released to my subscribers,
they have to visit the site over and over to get access
to the next lesson.

On these repeat visits, I “gently” offer my subscribers
some of my other products. When they log into the site
to get their free lessons, they see descriptions of all
the lessons (in the menu bar) with the ones that are not
available to them YET grayed out. That lets them see
that they do want to keep coming back as new lessons
are unlocked.

They received short email reminders as new lessons become
available, but if they ever miss an email, they also know that
the appropriate lessons will be available the next time
that they log in.

In that same menu bar, below the free course(s) that they
are currently enrolled in, I have a section labeled
“New Courses.” That section contains links to many of
my other free and for-sale courses. I list mostly for-sale
courses there, but, from time to time, do list other free
courses that I encourage members to subscribe to.

What I actually do is offer each of my free courses
independently, using each of those courses as a traffic
magnet, or ethical bribe, to get new people into one of
my very focused sales funnels. Each of the funnels that
“leads” with a free gift, also points the way to my for-sale
products.

In this way, selling for me can be as simple as offering
numerous free gifts (ebooks, audios, videos, etc.) with
each gift being accessible via my membership sites, where
members are also exposed to my other products.

As I gradually create new free gifts, I’ll eventually have
20 or more highly valued, free gifts, each bring in new
subscribers and exposing them to my other products.

Do you see how natural and “frictionless” this model is?

personally only sell products that I REALLY believe in,
so I have no problem with overtly selling them. Using
the built-in functionality of Rapid Residual Pro to offer
upsells is just a bonus!

income was the way to go. You know, selling products that
you sell once, and then get paid over and over again, for a
LONG time.

Consequently, I became an affiliate for a web hosting company
named Virtualis, and poured a lot of energy into trying to
sell web hosting, where I actually hung out on a discussion
forum frequented by hundreds of other resellers who all
shared tips with each other. I learned a lot about internet
marketing from that experience, including the fact that
selling a commodity can be fairly challenging.

What I discovered was that if you are going to sell a
commodity, you have to differentiate the product by making
it partly about YOU. The customer buys the product, but they
often buy from the sales person more so than from the company.

I later started selling autoresponders, telecommunications
via an MLM, and a few other products, in the hope of building
that coveted residual income.

I was one of those “internet marketers” who was also a
network marketer. So, I sold a few magic juices, but
eventually stopped selling them because I didn’t really
believe in them, OR because I discovered the generic
versions available cheaper at the local Walmart.

I’m still in MLM incidentally. I’m a distributor for
Send Out Cards, a company that lets you send full-color,
real, personalized greeting cards right over the internet,
CHEAPER than you can send comparable, personalized cards
from the local Walmart. I’ve been with them since 2004, have
built a successful business with them, and will continue
being a distributor, for the foreseeable future.

At the 2010 Send Out Cards Annual Convention, I listen to
a few people discussing having their distributorships
listed as assets in their WILLS. That’s when it sank in that I
had actually built a real business, at SOC, that with minimal
effort, will continue to pay me a regular income for the
foreseeable future.

The other residual income that I have actually built is
from a few membership sites. Membership sites are where
you bring hundreds or even thousands of people together
with a common interest, and they pay a monthly fee for
being a member of the group.

As long as the fee is less than the value that the members
perceive, they will stay, and you will have a dependable
monthly income.

Even a membership site that has only 200 members paying
$20 per month, would be an income of $4000 per month, and
if you didn’t have to put in many hours or much effort
to maintain that site, you could have a nice little
cash cow.

If you had several of these smaller site (as I do) or
even one super-sized membership site, the monthly income
could be enough for you to literally RETIRE on.

The key there, is to not build a job for yourself. So you
need to create a site that’s interactive enough where the
members produce most of the content, grow the site, and
keep each other coming back. If you can manage that, then
you have created a real asset that you could easily sell
some day, or just hand over to a manager or administrator,
to run for you.

I’m aware of several membership sites now that the owners
rarely have to touch, but they chug along making the owners
six or seven figures per year. You have to admit, that’s
really, really nice

Aside from having the right niche (an idea that attracts
enough people willing to pay for group membership) you
also need a reliable platform.

I’ve built sites on four or five different platforms over
the years and ALL of them were headaches. The worse ones
were scripts that someone gave me for free, mainly because
when someone gives you a free script, there is no incentive
to keep updating it, or provide any type of customer
support. If you aren’t selling the script, how can you pay
a tech support team?

The second worse type of scripts were ones where the
developers sold them inexpensively, but weren’t committed
to continuous updates and support. So, they come out with a
new version every two to three years, but in the meantime,
people using the scripts either had to hire programmers to
patch holes that they discover, or they ran their membership
sites on platforms that they knew was VERY insecure.

As I approach my 53rd birthday, I’m proud to say that I’m
actually contemplating retiring from internet marketing…
and spending more time traveling leisurely.

No, I’m not thinking of no longer teaching others, but I
AM thinking of handing off the day-to-day operation of
most of my endeavors to virtual employees, project managers,
etc.

I only plan on doing the things that I enjoy, to include
dropping in on my membership sites regularly (because I
have a bond with the community members), spending a lot of
time doing family things, and working on things that I
feel make a real difference in the world.

I am now moving ALL of my membership sites to the best,
but fairly inexpensive, membership site platform that
I’ve tested in my 15+ years online. That platform is called

I’m building my retirement sites on this platform because
I’ve known the developer of the software for about 4 years,
and have watched Rapid Residual Pro for about two years as
the developer and a TEAM of dedicated programmers and
testers have worked on several versions.

I now consider it “the cats meow” and it meets all of my
needs to include allowing me to offer free memberships,
one-time payment options, and recurring payment
memberships. I can also use a variety of payment processors
including Paypal, AlertPay, Clickbank, etc.

What I LOVE about the payment options, by the way, is that
I can set a sales page up with links to SEVERAL of these
options, and when an affiliate sends a visitor to the
site from a specific processor, the visitor is not shown
the other options.

For example, the page COULD be coded for Paypal, AlertPay
and Clickbank, but if the affiliate uses a Paypal link, the
other buttons wouldn’t show on the page that his referrals
landed on. That’s critical to me because otherwise the
affiliate could lose commissions if he didn’t use the other
processors.

I’ll use this script to power numerous sites that aren’t
really considered “membership sites” but that need a
“sales page,” payment processor, and download page. I’ll
use it for pages set up just for free giveaways or list
building. The software is extremely flexible.

software developer is a marketer, a copywriter, and someone
who has run numerous online and offline businesses. So, he
understands our needs, and he is also really dedicated to his
customers, as you can tell from watching the video that I
shared with you on YouTube.

Anyway, there you have part of my retirement plan. If you
aren’t building a business that you can sell, hand off to
an administrator/manager, or at least scale back on the hours
that you spend running that business, then you’re actually just
building a JOB for yourself.
