I have operated an on-line business - teaching others "how
to make a living on-line" since 1997. In that time, I have
watched a number of well-known personalities build very
successful businesses. I watched these people set up shop,
ask questions, experiment and finally become thriving
successes. These are many of your current "big guns."
I have also seen many, many individuals start on-line
businesses, discover they are not making any money, and
announce they are quitting. They realized that they could
earn a better living in the off-line world, with much less
effort, and much less headache. I watched a few individual
stay up countless late nights .... we often emailed each
other in the middle of the night. They built beautiful
sites around well-thought -out concepts, yet they still
failed.
I am sure many of you see the same thing still happening.
You have to be asking yourself, "What is the difference
between those who are succeeding and those who aren't?"
One of the biggest factors I notice but, many newbies may
not notice, is persistence. Many of today's big successes
are big successes primarily because they refused to give up.
They did not meet with much more early success than their
peers who gave up. They simply kept working at it. They:
- Built sites which they changed frequently, constantly
testing what on the site would convert visitors to
customers - or at least into repeat visitors.
- Tested many different ways of attracting traffic to
their sites and continued to use those which worked best.
They stopped wasting time with things that didn't work
for them. They also adjusted over time and online
dynamics changed.
- They joined affiliate programs for products that they
felt would be good sellers. They dropped products that
were not good sellers or which weren't as good as they
first thought. They generally promoted products they
knew and used. This allowed them to write articles and
personal reviews/recommendations about the products. It
is very obvious to readers when a person is writing
about something he really knows.
- They studied the wants, needs and concerns of their
ezine subscribers and looked for ways to develop products
and services which addressed these wants, needs and
concerns.
- They captured the email addresses of site visitors
by getting them to join their "lists" and then followed
up with list members' permission.
- Once they developed a product that was a proven seller
they set up an affiliate program to reach even more of the
market and make more sales. They recognized the power
of an affiliate program where they only paid for
PERFORMANCE.
- They communicated with others who served the same
market. They shared with each other what was working
and what wasn't working. They did not think of everyone
serving their target market as "the competition." They
acknowledged that the pie was big enough for everyone
and that they had the best chance at mega-success by
cooperating.
- They realized that at times they did need to spend
money to make money. They do spend money on paid search
engine listings, pay-per-click campaigns, and hiring
professional help in areas where their skills are weak.
- They realized that everything involves risk and that you
just minimize that risk and then proceed. Not everything
they attempted succeeded. They did have failures and
embarrassments. The secret there is to know when to cut
your loses and go on to something else. Realize that "sunk
costs" sometimes cannot be recovered.
My observation after nearly 7 years being in business
on-online and of making money every year is that your
road map to success lies in doing the things outlined
above. There is a time factor! You do have to build an
on-line identity or "brand" before you can expect sales in
droves. It also just takes time for things like being
indexed by the search engines and building a large affiliate
network. I have not discovered a way around this but I
have discovered many ways to shorten the wait. There
are many services that speed up the process by doing some
of the necessary legwork for you much more efficiently than
you can do it.
Mimic those who have succeeded online and you grab on to the
same "forces" that propel them to success. Therefore you have
to succeed too. At the same time, observe what those succeeding
are NOT doing. For example, they are not:
- Placing the same, identical ad as 20 other people for
the same product in the same ezine.
- Using bulk email or spam to bombard millions with their
message. Most know that this no longer works in their niche
and does more long-term harm than good.
- Stealing others ideas and simply duplicating their products.
It's ok to take a product idea and improve upon it. If you
just copy someone else's idea, your potential market will
notice this, and they will also know who was FIRST with the
product or service. On-line forces and alliances will see to
it that you are not in business very long.
- Misrepresenting their products or services. I've seen a
number of "big guns" close shop because regulatory agencies
disapproved of their tactics. It's critical to operate within
the law and within ethical standards.
- Going for short-term gains. The successes don't go
for the one-time sale because they recognize that the real
money is in the repeat sales to customers who know and
appreciate the quality of your products and services.
Rumors and facts about substandard products and services
travel fast on the web. There are many, many forums, lists
and oversight agencies who are constantly examining your
products, services and claims.
We've just reviewed why some succeed on-line while others
fail miserably. What may surprise you is that most of it
is readily observable and even intuitive. For some reason
many people ignore the obvious in search of some shortcut,
big secret, or magic bullet. Read through the facts
presented above and examine them carefully. You can only
conclude that they really are the difference between on-line
success and failure.
