Are Spam Filters Putting You Out Of Business?

Are spam filters putting you out of business?  If you operate
a business that depends upon sending or receiving email,
this is a question you need to seriously address.  You need
to honestly answer this question and you need to take immediate
action.  Why?  Because if you don't, much of your email is
probably not getting through.  Much of the email being sent
to you, and that you may WANT, may not be getting through.

Whether you realize it or not, your ISP is probably filtering
all of your email.  Virtually every ISP and provider of web-based
email that I have investigated filters email.  They do it to
protect their servers from being flooded with hundreds of
millions... BILLIONS of emails.  They do it to keep their
resources from being made practically useless by people who
indiscriminately send out hundreds of millions email messages
daily.  Without this protection, your ISPs server might remain
continuously clogged with all this email.  You email box might
also be continuously clogged.

But how does this affect your business?  More importantly, how
can you protect yourself from it?  It affect you because:

- Your newsletters are not getting through to many of your
subscribers.
- Your personal correspondences are not getting through to
many intended recipients.
- Potential customer inquiries are not getting through to you.
- Orders are not getting through to you.
- Emails requiring confirmation to transfer funds, or effect
other important transactions, are not getting through.
- Download instructions to customers may not be getting through.

Lots of important emails simply aren't getting through!  They
are being filtered out by your ISP.

How do I know this?  I personally have email accounts at most of
the major free email providers and with three differenet ISPs.
Some of these accounts were set up to monitor the email flow.
They all filter my email.  My ISPs (like many ISPs) provide
access to my email via webmail.  That means I can log into my
accounts and sort/read my email online.  I can also log in
using my email client (Pegasus, Eudora, Outlook, etc.) and
download my email to my harddrive.  The problem is when I log in
and download my email, not all of it is downloaded.  When I log
in and check my email via webmail, I see that my ISPs have
created folders labeled "spam" or something similar. The email
sorted to these folders is not downloaded by my email client.
It just sits on my server, and if I didn't know this it would
just sit there forever, or until my ISP deletes it based upon
some unknown criteria.  There's a good chance your ISP does
something similar.  You should check to see if they do TODAY!
** This is the first action you should take.   Confirm whether
or not your ISP is filtering your email.

Knowing that your email may not be geting through, how can
you resolve the problem.  Maybe you can't 100%.  Your ISP
could be filtering your email using several different programs.
One of these, SPAM ASSASSIN, rates your email based upon a
scoring system. If your email earns the requisite number of
points, it is not delivered to you. These filters include:

- Statements in the email telling how you got on the mailing
list.
- Too many exclaimation points in a row.
- Too many words spelled in all capitals.
- And mention of far too many different words to list her.

My friend Paul Myers did several great articles on this problem.
He's posted them onlin,e and they are well worth taking the time
to read.  Educating yourself on this problem is one of the
best investments you can make right now.  I recommend that you
read both of Paul's artiles which are posted online at:

If you publish any type of newsletter, you can also do something
that Paul and many other big name publishers are doing.  You can
post issues of your newsletter/ezine online.  Tell your
subscribers how to access it.  Then each time you publish you can
send out an email telling them what url the issue is posted at.
I have started doing this beginning with this issue.  I still
email the issue to my entire list. I also send a short email
telling that it's posted online and  explaining that if you
didn't get the regular issue, it was blocked by filters. I strive
to make my newsletter something you look forward to and want to
make sure it gets through to you.

Read the articles mentioned above and you will see that you
probably cannot publish your existing ezine without violating many
of the criteria that SPAM ASSASSIN screens for.  Other programs
also use very stringent and unrealistic criteria.  Many ezine
publishers have dramatically changed their ezines trying to combat
the problem, but I think it is a losing battle.  That's why I have
chose this alternate route.

When I look in the folder on my ISPs server to see what is
blocked I see many of my favorite ezines, order confirmation
emails, and many popular  discussion lists.  That's what convinced
me of the severity of the problem. I now check these folders on my
ISPs server regularly and you should too.  Just make it a part of
your daily routine. Otherwise, you will miss important email!

Do You Really Need All Those Scripts?

   I often use Internet Explorer (Ver 6.0) on my main system,
with Win XP.  However, as a consultant I prefer using Netscape
(Ver 4.78) to visit client or potential client sites.  Since
many no longer check to see how a page looks in Netscape, I can
often point out some changes to help Netscape users better enjoy
the site.

    As an aside, it's true that earlier versions of Netscape Ver
6 would not run for many who tried them.  However the current
version, 6.2, is working for most now.  To write as if Netscape
is a dead horse is a grand design error.

    While not true even six months back, I am now routinely
running into pages that simply will not load in Netscape.  In
those cases I have been able to check, the culprit is a script
of some kind that won't run with Netscape.

    To include such a script on your site is pretty silly, to
put it bluntly.  It's easy enough to check to see what browser
is in use.  If you haven't tested the script on that version,
don't run it.  Or write your code in such a manner that a
failure doesn't halt the download of the page.

    There's another trend in scripts that has negative
implications.  More and more pages are using more and more of
them.  Collectively they can slow download speeds, even on high
speed connections.  Each script must be processed by the host
server.  And this can slow things down during times of peak
demand on the server.

    There is no point to using a script you can possibly do
without.  Certainly none you feel compelled to use can be
allowed to crash a download.  This amounts to throwing visitors
away.  Can you really afford to do so?

Product Review:  Traffic Swarm

I first heard of Traffic Swarm several weeks ago and only glanced
at it at first.  After getting emails on the product from several
trusted friend, I decided to give it a try.  I think the thing
that convinced me to give it a try was that Jim Daniels was
endorsing it.   I've grown to trust Jim's endorsements over the
years.

Traffic Swarm is like StartBlaze on steroids.  You sign up free.
Then you earn credits.  These credits cause your short ad to be
displayed to others.  What they see is a page with six short
product descriptions. The person seeing this page clicks on your
link if it interests him.  The key to your success with the
program therefore is to make your description very enticing.
Basically, writing a good short ad!

After you sign up, you have three ways of earning credits.

1.  You are given some html code to paste into your pages.  This
generates an exit popup on the page and earns you a credit each
time it is activated. It also earns a credit for the person who
referred you and these referral credits go five levels deep.

2.  You can also set your browser default page to your Traffic
Swarm page. This  earns you a credit each time you open a
browser window and also earns credits 5 referrers deep.

3.  Finally, you can send people directly to your Traffic Swarm
url and earn a credit for each referral you recruit.  There is
currently a bonus being offered for getting new signups. You will
earn 1000 extra credits for each signup.  You can send people to
your url through ads, your signature file, etc.

You can also buy extra credits but I have not found this
necessary.

The credits can add up fairly fast.  But how useful are the
credits?  Each credit gets your ad displayed 1 time to someone.
As I said earlier, your ad is displayed with 5 others.  This
allows the viewer to choose which one (if any) interests him.
Since the potential visitor has a choice the traffic is
advertised as targeted.  It's not like some traffic exchange
programs where the visitor is automatically taken to someones
site.

My personal experience has been that for every 1000 exposures I
have averaged 21 new visiors to my site.  That my not sound like
many but I manage to get hundreds of thousands of credits.  I
post my link all over the place and each new sign up that I've
gotten has earned me 1000 immediate credits plus I get a credit
each time they earn a credit.  I get a credit each time one of
their referral earn a credit so the credits continuously add up
for me.  I earn referrals on referrals' referrals - 5 levels
deep.  That's where the credits kick into high year.  This is
how they will add up for you too.  PLUS you earn 1000 bonus
credits for each direct referral during the special promotion.

So you get LOTS of credit.  These credits send me a steady
flow of new, targeted traffic.  This traffic would be worthless
unless I converted it to customers or repeat visitors.  I
convert 19 out of 20 new visitors because they arrive at my
sight ready to grab what I am offering through my "ad."  As I
pointed out, this is key.  My ad is currently for a customized
list-building tutorial.   The tutorial is a hot commodity,
it's free, and visitors arrive at my site ready to grab it.  My
high conversion rate is why I consider TRAFFIC SWARM a hugh
success for me.  Choosing the right product and composing an
enticing description is what will determine whether this will
be a worthwhile product for you.
