Editorial:

This week's issue in all editorial and random rambling
rather than a formal article. As I make final preparations
for my workshop, it's quicker. I never realized there
were so many little things to do in preparation for a
workshop like this :-) Charter boats, banquet plans,
audiovisuals and computer support, travel arrangements,
and lots of other logistics - it's fun but challenging.

As I went through the past week a number of topics crossed
my mind but none stuck around too long :-) Many of you
attending the workshop called to discuss project ideas with
me. That's great, and that's what I enjoy doing. If you call
and I don't have someone else scheduled, I will take the
time to talk with you.

The biggest dilemma/problem that most people seem to have
is deciding upon what to market. You accept that you need
your own product, but what should it be. You also realize
that if you create and market the wrong product you're going
to waste a lot of time. As my friend Marlon Sanders says,
"dead ducks don't fly." You need to offer the customer
something that he wants. Too many people beat their heads
up against a brick wall because they spend a lot of time
and money trying to sell something nobody wants to buy.

Let me issue this invitation to you, although I may regret
it :-) If you have a product idea that you want to bounce
off of someone, send me an email describing the product.
If I honestly think it doesn't have much potential, I will
be blunt and tell you! That's what friends are for. I would
rather hurt your feelings now and redirect you than see you
spend a year trying to sell something that *nobody* wants.

I firmly believe that all of us have several great products
within us. It's usually something we know a lot about
although we may not give it much thought. It's something we
can throw ourselves into completely because it's also
something we care about. If you develop or sell a product
on something you're not passionate about, you hurt your
chance of succeeding because, when the going gets tough, you
will give up too easy.

Another fact too few people acknowledge is that your product
does not need to be some great new invention. It can very
easily be your unique slant on an existing product or
topic. For example, my cookbook is my most successful
product. There are tens of thousands of cookbooks, yet I
sell lots of cookbooks everyday. Newspapers write about my
cookbook, libraries order my cookbook, and people buy lots
of them as gifts. You'd think that market is over-crowded,
but people are always looking for new and exciting ways
to fix their favorite foods. People are always looking for
new ways to shine in front of family and friends.

The whole key to you successfully creating and marketing
your own product is identifying something people really
want, and properly packaging it. The same product, presented
to your customers in a different way often makes the difference
between success and failure. Many books that were dismal
sellers went on to become bestsellers after the title was
changed or the cover was redesigned. There are many nearly
identical pieces of software on the market. They have
virtually identical functionality, yet one really sells and
the other is a total loser. The difference is packaging
and presentation. The difference is marketing.

This is one of the topics we will spend a lot of time talking
about and brainstorming at my workshop. We will do a lot of
this both formally and informally (in after-hour gathering).
This is how and where major breakthroughs are made.

The other big thing I saw this week was several friends
breaking out of ruts and moving forward with projects. It's
very rewarding to see someone who has spent months if not
years tinkering with a website suddenly get an idea for
a more viable product. The light comes on, their face begins
to glow, and then set about creating or refining a product
that they now know will be a bestseller. If you haven't had
a similar experience recently, and you are stuck in a rut,
consider making major, radical changes. Consider completely
changing your product lineup. Consider dropping everything
you are currently working on and totally focusing on that
one project you've only dreamed about for a year. The
results will amaze you. How quickly you make progress will
shock you.
